I don't put too much science into sharpening my blades. Maybe I should, maybe I will, but right now I'm not patient enough and maybe a bit lazy. As such, I use whetstones most of the time with mixed results. I use this for my wood chisels. I don't like mixing them because of the different wear and tear of the stone. There's nothing wrong. The original color is natural bamboo which I painted black to avoid dirty fingerprints. The rubber pad under the base prevents slipping while the stone insert reduces noise and vibration. Overall a good basic product.
