They were very soft which is what I wanted. I didn't want to scratch the rims. As a result (also due to my inexperience with the mount) the protectors gnawed off and I threw them away when the work was done. It's ok, I bought them for one time use and they were cheap enough to write them off without a second thought. My only complaint about the quality is that I put the cord through the soft plastic grommet on one of the pieces. In the end everything worked out.
