Apparently they were plastered before being taken out of the box (judging by the look and feel of the fabric). I tried a few different paintings but they were epic failures. After consulting with my mother (a professional artist), I found that a lot of the mixed media art I like (gelly, decoupage, etc.) really isn't compatible with stretched canvases. In fact, she told me that a bit of "spring" is expected in a stretched canvas, and this is useful in some painting styles. This knowledge combined with my observation of the canvas itself as well as the sturdy frame allowed me to give this product 5 stars.
