I bought these because I have a lot of chef and camping knives that (originally) needed sharpening. I was one of those portable knives you saw on TV for quick sharpening, but it just wasn't good for damaged knives. I got it and was able to get almost all of the damage from my knives. And then I remembered that I have a hatchet that, with wear, gnaws wood well. In addition, this ax was easier to sharpen than a hand ax. And finally I had a sword that I accidentally turned the crap out of and yes I used a whetstone to sharpen it. He took out the dent and sharpened it to perfection. The investment is definitely worth it. The small white repair stone is really good for shaving the sides when you're done and the non-slip surface works fairly well on wooden surfaces but doesn't seem to do much more than that.
