Review on SIIG Esta II Pcie I by Arnold Carrigan

eSATA is not very compatible with external eSATA drives

I installed this card in a Sony Viao VGC-RA830G with Vista Ultimate. There's no problem showing the map, but when I plugged in the Seagate eSATA 750GB Free Agent Pro, the system hung on boot with a cable connected to the drive. In the worst case, I also tried a Western Digital 1TB iBook with an eSATA interface. The drive won't even turn on, even if you press the power button. The siig site doesn't offer much help or information. The incompatibility can be related to the drive, Vista or Sony Viao model. Anyway, I haven't found an external drive that works consistently with my system. The card may indeed work well, but the incompatibilities I encounter put me off eSATA. Hopefully future drivers and updates will solve my problem. When the drives are working, the transfer speed compared to USB and Firewire 400 is clearly noticeable. Maybe eSATA is better supported on Windows XP systems.
