I had previously installed a K&N kit and used it for about 5 years after removing the factory air intake with no problems. I had to remove the K&N kit to make room for a second battery under the hood, which meant installing a modular air intake made from Specter Performance parts. I spent 5 months doing this work; with regularly lit CEL display. Fuel economy with the factory intake was 16mpg and about 20mpg and was virtually unchanged with the K&N kit. When I installed the Specter Performance Modular Intake it dropped to about 8 around town, averaging 13 overall when the CEL light came on. changed the MAF sensor data so the air/fuel ratio was lean. To add some context here, I've converted bikes and have a full understanding of the combustion process in a 4-stroke engine and am also very familiar with the Toyota 5VZ-FE 3.4 engine so I know what I'm doing. I spent hundreds of dollars getting this job done, but ended up buying a new factory air intake and removing all intake and electrical parts, including the booster battery I installed. The CEL light went out, fuel consumption doubled, power increased.
