Review on πŸ’¨ Tenma 21-8240 Vacuum Desoldering Iron: Powerful and Efficient Solder Removal Tool by Toby Galbraith

great idea, doesn't really work

I really wish it was a good idea. Unfortunately, it's difficult to make a piston removal tool that works at this price point. For thirteen dollars, probably impossible. If you're using a piston desoldering tool *and* a soldering iron, the distance between the piston and the tip is very short, so the vacuum is sharp and quite strong. Add about three inches (the distance from the heated tip to the bottom of the desoldering iron, and the vacuum loses power. Lots of power. What takes one shot with a separate vacuum tool often takes three or four with this one. This is especially true if the component pin is thick or the solder joint is large This may work well for small, lightly soldered spots, but the chance of the pad lifting is much higher than I would like.
