Product is durable, complements the carafe aesthetically and keeps REALLY warm, I've tested this repeatedly. The vent allows heat to escape, but much more slowly than an open carafe. This is probably intentional. Borosilicate glass has a dependable coefficient of thermal expansion, but no glass makes the perfect pressure vessel for hot liquids - let your imagination run wild. If you've intentionally tried to pour from a carafe with a lid, I don't know what to say... More on the lid: As mentioned, it's (very/overly) strong, attractive, and effectively slows heat dissipation from the carafe . Unfortunately, the lid is so heavy that it constantly fails to fit snugly against the thin borosilicate glass walls of the top of the carafe. This, in addition to the stress of heat cycling on the decanter, will mean the demise of your decanter. I have used the carafe regularly for 7 years and it was in perfect condition to the naked eye. Six months ago I added a lid to the mix. Today, without warning (i.e. no visible cracks), the lid broke at the slightest touch while I was in the process of rinsing the carafe. The lid is great for people who love hot coffee and a seamless aesthetic, just order your carafe of choice from Chemex. every time you need filters. I hope yours doesn't explode during use. I'll just drink faster or put it on the stove. Happy brewing.
