It protects the surface.
It looks good in my car and the price is right. My only disappointment is that I thought it had more pillows and if you look at the pictures it looks like the setup is like it's a shower cap if that makes sense. Instead, it has 3 elastic straps that keep it in place. Honestly, it fits well and looks good.
