Review on Garcima 15 Inch Carbon Steel Paella by Robert Hoge

Revainrating 1 out of 5

To eliminate 99% of the bad reviews for this product! If it rusts, it's YOUR FAULT :)

I often rely on negative reviews, and sometimes they can be more helpful than positive ones. But in this case I am giving a 1 star rating in hopes that people paying attention to the negatives will notice. There's nothing wrong with this pan rusting with abuse. It's made of carbon steel, which is over 97% iron, so yes, it will rust just like cast iron. It needs to be seasoned to prevent rust and improve performance. These facts have been known since the beginning of the Iron Age, how did they manage to elude so many people? All those negative reviews make it sound like the thing will rust within seconds of being washed. This is obviously wrong. It will not noticeably rust if you wash it and dry it immediately (as instructed). Nonetheless, check out some YouTube videos about carbon steel baking and the results you can achieve. Personally, I prefer flaxseed oil, but you can use shortening or any food-grade oil/lube. It doesn't have to be healthy or organic oil - it chars in the process, you just have a polymer-like, non-reactive carbon coating that makes a nice, attractive pan with a natural non-stick coating. There are people who "salvage" abandoned cast-iron pans that have been neglected for decades, rebrand them, and resell them. If you've thrown that pan away because it's rusty, you can become one with your shame (and demand a refund). Your education ) :)
