It is very difficult to cut large holes in drywall with a hand drill. It was very difficult to hold the cutter even while spinning without snagging and snagging. It worked but I ended up having to use a hacksaw to finish 2 of the 5 holes I had to cut because the pilot hole was getting too big. DO NOT use a pilot drill in drywall. This will quickly widen the pilot hole to the point where you can no longer keep the torch centered. I started by drilling the pilot hole with a slightly smaller bit than the pilot to make it more solid and then used a smooth pilot in the router. If you have good DIY skills, you can probably do this job in drywall as well.
