My wife and I just built a home here in rural Iowa. Once our septic tank and leach field were installed, we smelled the stench outside. We have a vent pipe (candy cane) at each end of the lye field and a smaller chimney on the roof of the house. The smell could come from any of them and seemed to depend on the direction and speed of the wind. About two weeks ago we ordered a vent filter and placed it on the vent closest to the septic tank (top of the suds field). The result is amazing. No more stench! Okay, maybe a bit off the roof at times, but it's much better this way. There are instructions in the package and you need to remove the lid and pour out the charcoal from the plastic package before installing the vent pipe filter.
