Review on DeWalt DWA1184 Black Oxide Drill by Darrell Shreves

Revainrating 2 out of 5

I received Black and Gold not HSS Black Oxide

I know this is confusing because these products are shown as Black Oxide HSS Bits and I thought that was what I ordered. I have received black and gold bits that say they work well on wood, metal and plastic but the only detail for metal that needs drilling is a picture of what looks like a galvanized metal roof panel on an enclosure if i get it I ordered a kit because I needed it immediately so I used it even though I got the wrong one. Not sure what black and gold was supposed to be, but as I drilled through mild steel in 1/16" increments, one of the cutting tips curled cleanly and the bit is now useless. the blade is blunt; it broke the drill about 1/8 inch. I doubt I can sharpen a new cutting tip on it. I appreciate replacing a drill that died on first use. For full disclosure, I set my Milwaukee 18v cordless rock drill to "1" at the lowest speed, not with a hammer. I drilled overhead under my truck but with more room and a straight shot perpendicular to the hole. Aside from one size breaking, the rest of the bits gave a pretty good chip size and the cutting speed was pretty fast. I would consider updating my rating to find a fair replacement for the broken bit. and a full disclosure from DeWalt on the difference between the black oxide I ordered and the black and gold I received, so I'm using the bits for their intended purpose.

Pros
  • Jobber Drill Bit
Cons
  • Slightly Torn
