We installed two mechanical timers on our outdoor hose bibs and loved it, but the momentary closing of the valve caused a water hammer that was very loud at times was. I read about water hammer and began to worry about damage or fatigue to my copper tubing. So I tried them and now we can't even tell when the valve closes. Not only can we eliminate the loud "thump" that made the dog bark, but it also quiets our plumbing. Attached is a photo showing a simple setup using a 90 degree angle, spark gap and timer. I think it has a really clean aesthetic.
