Review on πŸ”§ ABN Engine Timing Tool Set: Perfect Fit for Mini Cooper N12, N14 - BMW, Citroen, Peugeot by Jeff Rubio

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A few real life tips:

Used on a 2010 Mini Cooper with a naturally aspirated 1.6 liter engine. This tool box had all the special tools I needed. . In addition to this kit, I saw a special bracket for mounting the crankshaft and a bracket for mounting the engine with the engine mount removed. Both are not required. What I think is necessary to complete this work: New torque for the deformation of the screws for both variable valve timing sprockets. And also a new one for the crankshaft. Have a good torque wrench and torque meter handy. Or get a good digital wrench that does both. Buy a good quality timing kit from Melling or Cloyes. I used the Autozone kit which includes Universal Chinese. It worked, but I'm not sure I'll go down that route again. Get a new valve cover gasket and a new crankshaft oil seal. are processed perfectly, contrary to some other reviews. The hole goes into the aluminum and there will be a bit of corrosion - use oil or grease and move it back and forth until it is properly seated in the flywheel hole. This is a finely crafted fit. On this car at least I found it necessary to unbolt the throttle body to allow the timing chain tensioner to be removed. Simply unscrew the throttle body and set it aside. I found it interesting that neither the cam sprockets nor the crank sprocket are keyed onto their respective shafts. They are easily aligned with the tools in this kit and rely on the correct tightening of the special bolts for all three sprockets. That is why it is so important to buy new ones as it is a torque screw. This engine has vanos gears on both camshafts and while I don't think their position matters, I found two spots on the sprockets (one on each) which I lined up. In retrospect, I think that was unnecessary. I've made hundreds of timing adjustments and just found it odd that these sprockets don't have splines. Other than that, I found the job relatively easy and would do it again any time.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • I have no negative feelings about this, everything is fine
