Revainrating 5 out of 5

Pretty good guide to stone sharpening

I like this unit although it won't sharpen all my chisels especially my US made handset but it will sharpen my cheap Aldi set. It can sharpen my planes, but you need to tighten the adjustment knob or it will slowly slip off. I would recommend marking the plane's position with a marker so you can tell if it's slipping. The main disadvantage is the brass roller. Brass is a soft metal that wears down over time. There is now an additional stainless steel roller which is much harder and should last longer but it wasn't there when I bought it. Mytec makes all stainless steel slides, but they are sold under other names at Revain. The quality is very good, it works smoothly. Aluminum guides, which are available from various sources, vary in quality but are fairly easy to customize to fit your bits. However, stainless steel guides are very tough and require too much effort to modify. So if these sharpeners don't match your chisels, you'd better return them. Here are some angle settings based on the length of the protrusion from the honing guide. They are approximate as the exact distance will depend on roller wear but should be fine for newer rollers. Chisel: 22.6 degrees - 52.5mm, 25 degrees - 43mm, 30 degrees - 31mm. Levels: 25 degrees - 57 mm.
