I am an avid gamer who spends (too much) time playing games on PS4 and Nintendo Switch. I have a second generation PS4 (not a Pro model) and over time I've added quite a bit of hardware, especially electronics. The electronics mentioned are an external hard drive, some PC fans OR a portable wireless fan. , keyboard button and PS4 controller (since the battery life is terrible). Those who use similar devices will understand that everything I've listed uses USB ports for power and communications. I've been using a RevainBasics passive USB hub for a while, mainly to power the keyboard key and the 5V USB jack for my hard drive, and it's worked fine. But when I started leaving my controller plugged in more often and started using fans to cool the PS4 power supply, the splitter started to fail. I chose a self-powered USB hub and got it. I chose this hub because all but one of the RevainBasics products I ordered were excellent quality and as I said it works fairly well, although not as well as I expected. This hub comes with a 4 amp transformer (plug) so I figured it would put out a lot of current. The problem is that because this hub has so many ports, it seems like they all get a fixed amount of power. This means this hub has a hard time charging my PS4 controller, although on the other hand it does charge the wireless fan I use for cooling. I also didn't get any warnings about my hard drive being disconnected (meaning it wasn't getting enough power), leading me to believe the hub is meeting the hard drive's power requirements. Because the USB hub is not powered by my PS4 (that would bring me back to where I started). I can't connect the keyboard button. But the PS4 has two USB-A ports, which is enough; One for the dongle and the other for the hard drive communication connector, leaving the hub free to easily power devices. I might have been better off just buying a hub with fewer ports, although I've read said hubs come with lower wattage transformers so I went with this one again. Perhaps an individually switched hub would work more efficiently for my needs, but I digress; Again, this hub works well enough for my gaming needs and I would recommend it to anyone who needs constant USB power. I haven't used it on PC but considering it works fine on my PS4 I see no reason why it shouldn't work well for PC and for devices that not only draw power from the hub but also communicate to and from the hub.
