Faster than fast ethernet on my old laptop

I was pleasantly surprised to see about a 3X increase in download speed on my old Windows 7 laptop when I was closer to the wireless router. Please note that my laptop has "Fast Ethernet" which limits the wired connection to 100MHz. I had some setup issues because I set my router to 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz with the same SSID. My laptop with this gadget seemed to want to work at 2.4 GHz frequency by default. So I renamed the 5GHz SSID, disabled the built in 801n interface on my laptop and now it connects at a higher frequency every time. Device speed is capped at 433MHz when using 5GHz, so I think this limits download speed as well. My phone, which will be running at 866MHz, has a download speed of 234Mbps, which is probably all my ISP is giving me. I didn't know enough about the MHz speed to look for a faster one when I bought this USB device, but for $8 it's pretty damn good. I didn't like the utility that installs with the USB gadget. Here you can select a network and enter a password. For some reason the default password stayed the same as the MAC address and no connection was made that way. I uninstalled the utility but left the dll for the device and how it works. Please note that the connection speed with this device at 5 GHz is quite sensitive to the distance from the router. I can get the advertised 433MHz within 5ft, but it drops to 260MHz when I move to my regular workstation, which is 15ft from me and across the floor. Perhaps one of the devices with an antenna would have a better range.
