I've had a pond in my garden for a number of years and no matter what I did or didn't do, I always had a problem with algae, especially in spring. The water was so green I couldn't see my fish. That's just what I thought until someone told me about barley straw. I doubted it but decided to give it a try. It was like magic. I threw the ball in the pond and left for the weekend. When I came back everything was as clear as it could be. I think it worked for me quicker than I would normally expect but if you have the patience and keep it in the water stream it will work. I keep a ball in my pond year round (although it's reportedly not doing very well in cold water) and I almost never have an algae problem. My water is crystal clear
