After using a basic brass caliper for the last two years, I've finally settled on a real caliper. IMPRESSIVE! It's amazing. Easy to read in any light and FAST. Scales are ideal for a carpenter. My only complaint is that it's too expensive to leave idle or try to put in my back pocket, so I always have to use a case. I suspect it's a compromise over the $10 manual sliding caliper. This is less of a complaint than a warning if you think it will 100% replace a cheap caliper. I still find myself pocketing an old one for rough work. UPDATE ----- 11/21/2013 I've been using this caliper for over six months now and absolutely love it. I'm using it more and more - and for new types of tasks. It's just a pleasure to measure with him. I appreciate the quality, fit and feel every time, which reminds me I made a good purchase. Now I've stopped using my cheap caliper and put the Starrett on full power.
