Smart in form and function

This kitchen gadget is actually quite smart as form meets function. In fact, this is the epitome of industrial design. Despite this, I only gave this product 4 stars and with good reason. As you start breaking down each level, you'll quickly realize that some ideas work better than others in this design. The metal apple corer is actually quite good and well designed. At the next level, the idea begins to crumble. This is a square plastic mesh cutter that can be pushed through soft fruit. Unfortunately I don't see any other way to use this than maybe an egg or maybe an avocado. Unless you're just trying to shred something, this square grate doesn't seem to have many uses. If you go down to the grating layer, you'll encounter another larger grate with protruding plastic spikes. Outside. If you've ever used a metal grater, you know how effective it is. I'm not entirely sure how good the little plastic spikes are at rubbing, but I'm fairly certain it won't work. Metal reamers with real cutting tools are likely to do a lot more. It's a good idea, but implementation at this level is a bit disappointing. However, the two layers of juice just below for citrus are well done and fit the bottom bowl quite nicely. In fact, all the layers fit perfectly on the bowl. The "leaves" above look nice, but do they work? An avocado spoon does a pretty good job of removing the skin from an avocado. The included picks for picking and dipping fruit are nice too, but it's not really a kitchen tool. In fact, a crush would do little with anything other than a banana or an avocado. And the chopper probably wreaks more havoc than it solves a kitchen problem. It works much better with a wire rope trowel. The last high leaf should be the citrus peel cutter. While it can be effective for slicing citrus, it certainly doesn't peel. I believe this may help start the peeling. But there are better plastic peel starters than this one. Another thing I want to say about this is that it's more than it looks. Remember that the maroon layer is an apple corer. Therefore, this ring must be large enough to accommodate the core of the largest apples. This should give you an idea of how big it is. If all layers were fully functional as a kitchen helper, I would give 5 stars here. Since some of the layers are less useful as plastic instead of metal, I splice the star. Although the view is actually pretty stunning. The device itself and the packaging in the box are truly amazing. Some Japanese designs work very well and this one, at least in shape, is stunning. However, the functionality isn't all that was intended, as mentioned above. And the last thing to pay attention to. Since this item is made in Japan and most of the box is written in Japanese, it's impossible to tell what it's made of. So if you're worried about BPA-free plastic, you might as well give up until you know for sure what it's made of. if you only buy for decoration.
