A useful tool for wheel builders

Like some of the other reviewers, I've been building bike wheels for a long time and have never dealt with a tool like this one. For deep profile (aero) rims I usually use a shorter cotton tip. Then I read about it and decided to give it a try. Much to my surprise, this really made the initial lacing process that much easier. I usually try to screw the nipple of each spoke onto the spoke a few turns; Once the wheel is laced, I remove the slack and start tensioning and releasing the tension. It's not critical, but I like to start by threading the nipple of each needle onto the needle about the same length. The first thing I did with this tool was file a reference mark on the head. That way I know how many turns the tool needs to make after the thread engages. It is now very easy for me to position the spoke nipple, screw it in a few turns and pull the tool out, knowing that each spoke was twisted about the same amount. I usually put a dab of silicone grease on the underside of each spoke nipple (and between the nipple and washer if using washers). Since the tool is upside down I rest the nipple lightly on top of the tool and then apply grease (or washer and grease). Overall, this tool was a welcome addition to my wheel building tool kit. And it lasts much longer than a shaved cotton swab :-)
