Absolutely normal!
I bought this wood carving kit to make decorative wooden scrolls to roll on clay slabs giving them a nice surface pattern. The tools worked great with 1" and 1 1/2" wooden dowels. Nice sharp edges gave me smooth cuts. I think I'll try that with printable linoleum carvings. The only thing I didn't like about this set was that the handles were too short and not wide enough for me. Even though I have big paws. So if you have medium-sized hands, tools are more suitable for you.
