The sand is very fine, which is good for plant roots (?). HOWEVER, you will spend HOURS sieving it over and over again to remove the fine dust that accumulates during shipping! If you don't, the tank will be VERY cloudy (almost as bad as London fog lol). a plate that you place on top of the sand (one cup at a time!) to keep the aquarium from misting up again. I love the look BUT is it worth all the effort? NO! EVERY time you change the water it fogs up the entire tank and takes about 48 hours to fully settle (for a 10 gallon tank). By this time, living plants with larger leaves are completely covered in gray. Dust! Waste of money and now I have to disassemble the whole aquarium, clean it completely, use a different substrate and start over! Good thing I haven't put the fish in it yet!
