These are just first impressions, I plan to come back and add something. I was looking for a printer to convert a few boxes of old papers into electronic format. So far I've been really impressed with the R40. I can scan with my current printer, but it's slow, noisy and not the best quality. Definitely not a candidate for what I wanted to do. Setup was easy. You need to download the 525MB software. I missed the notice on the download page directing US customers to the download link. My download speed was slow, but it has slowed down. Installation went without problems. Benefits1. Quickly. When I first looked at 4 or 5 pages, the scanner was set to 200dpi grayscale and the pages just slid through the feeder. I thought both sides couldn't scan but it was all there. Even in color at 300dpi it's pretty fast (max 600dpi). This is a completely different speed compared to the scanner built into my printer. I can't prepare the next batch in time to keep up with the scanner.2. The scanner says it rotates pages into the correct orientation and overall it does a really good job. I finally found a section in the scanner software that allowed me to rotate a page that was scanned in the wrong orientation (it would be helpful for Canon, if it would work with a right click with some other options). I'd like to do some more testing, but a couple of tests I've done with some pages turning or flipping all pages showed them all in the correct orientation (as mentioned, I had some early issues with some scans, but that's it not the case now it is not a problem).3. Works fine with thin magazine paper. Torn edges don't seem to be a problem, but some of the adhesive from the back remains on the pages and they don't feed properly, causing paper jams. Any amount of glue is harmful. If you run your fingers along the edge and feel uneven, take it off, trim the edges, whatever. If you see a flat line of glue, cut it off. Sometimes it will eat, sometimes not.4. Compact, nice and small. With the document feeder and output tray installed and extended, it measures approximately 12" x 15". 11 inches deep. Remove the feeder, pull back the tray and it measures approximately 7.5 inches high, 6.5 inches deep and 11 inches wide.5. All necessary cables are available. A minor thing maybe, but nothing is more annoying than getting a new toy and finding out you need to get a cord. While many of us have boxes of old cables, that doesn't mean we have the right one.6. Return shipping is included if I need to return it or I don't like it, I don't think that would be a problem. Return shipping can be an unpleasant surprise.7. The power adapter works from 100V to 240V, I doubt I'll take it with me on a trip abroad, but it's a good feature. Cons: 1. The software version of the manual is useless. I had pages being turned and do you think "turn over" or "turn pages" found the information useful? If you said yes, you were wrong.2. I finally figured out how to scan and then write a file to my hard drive by setting up a one-touch button. Before that, sometimes the file was written to my hard drive when I clicked "Done" and sometimes it wasn't, or I had no idea where it went. At first it drove me crazy and slowed down the overall speed a lot.3. Does a good job with images, but if I were scanning a lot of images this would not be the scanner I would choose. I didn't deduct anything from my review as that's not what I bought this scanner for, but I'll note. The file was written to my hard drive, sometimes not, or I had no idea where it went.
