As for the negative reviews - if you have an unhealthy/chemically unsafe tank - this won't help you. Correct your filter and water changing habits first. For me it was a great addition to a healthy aquarium, but one that was prone to algal blooms and near-constant turbidity due to our local water supply. After about a month in the water and no change in my habits (same water change schedule, same feeding, etc.) the cloudiness cleared up and stayed clear. A large biofilter would do the same but at a higher cost. and since my test values were always great, my current filtering was enough to get "over the hump", so to speak.
