I bought this item to use a drill press to drill dowel holes. The advantage was that it was a carbide tip with a pointed end. Since I use a lot of "exotic" hardwoods that are difficult to cut with routers, carbide was a big plus for me. It also drills a relatively shallow bottom hole, although not as well as a Forstner bit. The length of the flute and therefore the depth of cut is quite limited at only 1.375 inches (approx). A *VERY* important fact not mentioned in the description or shown in the picture is that the flat portion is approximately 5/16 inch wide the full length of the shaft. This wasn't a problem for me as my drill press chuck is 1/2 inch and the cams just scrape a flat surface. However, if your drill has less power, it probably won't work. for drill presses, so that's clearly why, and luckily I was able to adapt it for use in a drill press. I'm not sure how long it will last, but it will definitely last longer than a carbon or high speed steel drill bit.
