Ok something is going wrong so I understand why there are some negative reviews but overall this item is really great. I found it accurate and reproducible with good performance. First, the battery is easy to insert. Slide the cover off, remove the small rubber insert, insert the battery, reinsert the rubber insert (note where the tab goes) and replace the cover. It's harder to remove the battery, but you can do it with a pickaxe or small knife. The spring force is very similar to my traditional Starrett dial gauge and you can retract the shaft with the little "D" knob on top. If you have trouble unscrewing the tip, hold the shank (not the body) steady with something that won't damage the shank like any other indicator. Two things I really like are that it auto shuts off after about 5 minutes and remembers your zero when it's off. Extension shafts are also very good to have. Yes, it's mostly plastic, but it's only $16. It came with 2 batteries which is good as one of the installed batteries was dead but it was from 2005. The other also from 2005 was fine. That's the only negative I have with him.
