Review on πŸš— Convenient 2-Pack InstallGear Universal Car Power Door Lock Actuators with 12-Volt Motor by Ryan Fuhrer

Works great, no problems, lasted a few years

I've used these universal drives on other projects and they work great. Recently a 9 year old setup on my car stopped working. At first I thought it was the actuator, I disconnected it from the system, powered it from an external 12 volt source and it worked fine. , but as an intermittent signal. I found that the problem was in the wiring at the door hinge between the unit and the actuator. Nine years of opening and closing the driver's door had weakened the wiring and there was only sporadic contact. I replaced the wiring and outer jack with a better product and everything is working as it should again. While in the door I also noticed that the strut and drive shaft were still bright, clean and not rusty. I've repaired doors with metal magnetic drives on other projects because of the lack of work and they will be rusty, sticky and quite a mess. Housed in a plastic or nylon housing with no exposed moving metal parts, these versatile actuators hold up well. If you have this type of drive and it seems to be performing poorly or not working, the problem may be with your installation and not the product. I've seen some pretty hacky do-it-yourself installs and was amazed they worked at all, after all they don't work due to a lack of mechanical moral skills and just blame the product.

Pros
  • (2) 8.5" cranks
Cons
  • So far so good
