Monroe Max Air Shocks For Jeep Cherokee

Be prepared for the upper shock studs to break when removing the old shocks. I did all 4 on my Cherokee. You can google a few different ways to fix this, it's not that bad but be prepared for a little more time. The shocks themselves appear to be of good quality, but the tee included in the installation kit is not. It is made of plastic and the threaded part is easy to be damaged. It's also not long enough to install anything thicker than 1/8 inch or so. I tried using the existing hole in the hitch, but the valve didn't reach far enough to inflate the tires on it. I also tried a valve extender, but that wasn't enough for the extender to work either. I had to move the valve and when I removed/installed it again the soft plastic threads were almost worn out. Monroe support said they don't have any other valve. I found brass fittings at a truck supply center that can be assembled into a stronger replacement but would require fabricating a mounting bracket. During installation I had to rotate the passenger side damper so the air intake was facing out (against the instructions) to prevent the nylon air line from touching the exhaust pipe. I used a large adjustable wrench on the shock bolt to twist it into the shock eyelet and to my surprise the ears buckled! Upon closer inspection, it can be seen that the shaft of the bar is not solid, but is made from hollow steel tubing with lugs made by flattening the ends of the tubing. I had to straighten them in a vise after rotating the pin to the right angle. The rest of the installation was easy. My Cherokee rear end sagged about 3 inches with the 300-400 pounds of gear I carry. I found that about 50psi aligns the back to match the front. The ride was a little firmer, but nothing to complain about, and better as the rear no longer hit the bump stops. I tow a trailer sometimes and it's nice to be able to add some air and right the jeep. It takes more pressure than I thought to level the car, but after a month at 50psi there was no noticeable reduction in air pressure or rear lift.
