Great switch, with 1 caveat.

This is an extremely economical option when you need to add 10GbE to your home or small business network. Personally I think the best use cases for this switch are home networking and/or a low cost backend for something like VMWare VMotion. .or something not connected to your managed switch/client access work network. Why? See below. You will almost inevitably run into loopback issues when attempting to use this switch on a network that contains managed switches. I was stupid enough to try this and logged over 29,000 network topology changes in a couple of weeks. For those unfamiliar, that's too many topology changes in such a short amount of time, and it's an indication that something is very wrong. This was causing dropouts and ghost calls on our VoIP network (BPDU issue) and was completely uninteresting to investigate. Finally figured it out, pulled the switch, and as if by magic, everything was back to normal. I tested it on my home network just to be sure and yes it happens there too. This switch claims to be the "master" switch and causes a lot of problems (the VoIP issues mentioned above, DNS resolution timeouts, random internet outages. Turn off the switch and all symptoms go away). Get a managed switch if you need it. on a production network. If your goal is multiple wired connections around the home or a vMotion-style control network, you've found a pretty good deal.

Pros
  • 2.5G/5G NBASE-T: Connect NBASE-T capable devices at 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps for higher throughput than Cat5e or higher cabling.
Cons
  • unreliable
