We have always used cheaper binoculars and expensive Steiners on our 35ft and 40ft sailboats. I finally gave up and just put a pair of Fujinon 14x40 stabilized binoculars up for sale. These are the Steiner assassins. It is so easy. At 14x I see MUCH more than with the Steiners 7X50 and the image is stable. It's not even NAH. Double magnification And you get a stable image compared to traditional 7X50 marine binoculars. Whether you want to read a marker, see a boat, or watch a whale, this is the best deal. A 10mm reduction in lens diameter would have you thinking they would be less effective in the dark, but the stabilization system more than makes up for this. Use them and you won't be able to go back to ANY pair of binoculars and I say this after using some of the best. This is cutting-edge technology combined with reliable optics. (Hint: They are superior to the Canon versions, which use a softer imaging system.) Cons? They're not light, but they're not good binoculars either. In addition, they are less comfortable to hold compared to conventional models. For long-term storage, remove the batteries. You can put a filter on the front elements, but most likely this is not necessary. The floating strap is fine and the pelican style case is good. For sailors. Absolutely the best on board. We went swimming with them and everyone loves them. Don't try them or you'll have to buy them. They are completely superior to any other binoculars afterwards.
