Review on Reversible Cherry Wood Edge Grain Cutting Board By John Boos - 20" X 15" X 1.5 by Doug Davis

Revainrating 4 out of 5

My initial impression before first use: a few cosmetic imperfections, but very sturdy and beautiful.

Overall, this is a nice board straight out of the box. It's hefty (I think I heard around 14 or 15 lbs), and it comes "raw". By "raw" I mean it looks freshly milled (see picture with the plastic wrap the board came in, which I perceive to be wood/sawdust powder) and a little dry/unprotected. Upon receiving the board, I seasoned it with a light coat of John Boos oil, let the board sit overnight, and then applied the John Boos board cream. I made sure there wasn't any dry/uncovered spots to prevent water damage. Both the oil and cream bring out the underlying characteristics of the maple, as well as seal the board from potential water damage during future washings. The board has a few cosmetic imperfections, which is okay. It's a natural wood product, and if you watch the video of these boards being produced at the John Boos mill, the utilitarian purpose of the board seems to be the key selling point. I bought the board recently at $78 (that appears to be the price today currently, 10/7/20), so if you're thinking about getting one of these boards, you should. I should note that I haven't used the board yet, so this is my impression from unboxing the board and seasoning the board to prepare it for use. My rating may change depending on my experience with the board.
