Review on AOC CU34G2X: Ultimate Immersive, Frameless Ultrawide Screen for HD Gaming and More! by Larry Guffey

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Ideal for gaming and work. Use a DisplayPort cable, not an HDMI cable.

This review is for the 34" CU34G2X UltraWide QHD 3440x1440 Monitor. It has been used for about a week before writing this review. This is the best monitor I have ever seen with my own eyes! The curve is perfect, not too big, not too small. It's really exciting, especially for gaming. And when reading the web and doing long-term work, the curve still looks good and doesn't distract. Looks amazing even without content! Sturdy metal stand and wide metal legs. Very durable. The metal legs have plenty of strong, grippy rubber pads to keep it where you put it. The screen is neither too glossy nor too matte. The red piping is well placed and doesn't overdo it. It looks very modern and professional, but still draws attention, as befits a gaming monitor! Refresh rates easily reach 144 Hz in games and on Windows 10. Color reproduction is t really good in my opinion. A printed sheet of color calibration comes with serialized results for your specific monitor, so AOC really does go out of their way to prove they are indeed high quality monitors. This is a 'VA' type panel with ultra-low latency. This makes it the most beautiful panel type in terms of technology and color. IPS panels have traditionally had slower refresh rates than VA panels, but this monitor proves that you can have the most beautiful kind of VA panel AND an ultra-low 1ms refresh rate. Games look fantastic in the ultra-wide format. For example, Halo on PC actually gives you a full field of view with this monitor, as does Rocket League. This is how you really get the decisive advantage in some games. The ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio lets you literally see more of the pitch than anyone who sticks to the 16:9 aspect ratio that most 1080p or 4k monitors use. Brightness is great, even a bit too bright on the highest settings unless you're in a very bright room. So fine if necessary. All brightness and contrast settings and even game profiles are adjusted via the physical buttons under the monitor as well as via the G-Menu software. So when using the G Menu software, you don't have to fiddle with the monitor's physical controls at all to fully customize and control the monitor's settings. The G menu even has hotkeys so you can change monitor settings to different profiles almost instantly. The G Menu software can be downloaded from the AOC support site. Be sure to use the supplied DisplayPort cable with this monitor. HDMI connectors do not have the same functionality as DisplayPort connectors. To get Freesync, 144Hz and a native resolution of 3440 x 1440 are used together. You MUST use one of the two DisplayPort connectors on this monitor. And make sure you don't just convert your HDMI source to DisplayPort. The signal source from your PC must also be DisplayPort. The package also includes a USB 3.0 cable. You can use it to connect to a computer and then use the monitor as a USB 3.0 hub. Power is disabled by default on USB 3.0 ports, but you can enable it through the monitor's settings menu or using the G-Menu software. Great monitor, highly recommend.
