Review on Knitted Lace Estonia DVD Techniques by Amber Perez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent book but with a small flaw

I have to admit the beautiful cover drew me to this book. I am new to lace making (but not new to knitting) and had just completed a simple lace making project when I purchased this book. I started with a "lily of the valley" scarf. I checked online for typos and found that all the corrections were already included in my print. I started with the scarf and by the end of the first iteration of the pattern I realized that there was a flaw in the pattern that wasn't in the typos and that couldn't be properly corrected except by a complete rework of the pattern. How rude. I faked a modification which enabled me to continue working. It was very disappointing. In the end I gave up on that project and made another Nancy Bush pattern in Lace Style - a Lily of the Valley Shawl. This pattern was really easy and fun to knit until I got to knitting with a border, the same type of border ("modern") in many of the patterns in this book. She recommends discarding the first stitch of each row, then gives instructions on picking up stitches on the edges for a border. There was no way to make the border neat. I must have made a hundred stitches for the border, and then I decided to stop and tie this nonsense. He looks great the way he is. I would recommend that you do not edge knit unless you are knitting the first stitch of each row, instead of slipping them off. Otherwise you get ugly holes. Knitted on the border, Estonians still do not consider it authentic. They also don't use the Kitchener stitch. However, this is a good book, and if you want to make a shawl or shawl in Estonian "style",

Pros
  • good thing
Cons
  • I don't remember but there was something
