This device has a very small latch so my large dogs can't use their noses to open the gate. I have a similar gate from another manufacturer and they can open it at will. You lose some of the convenience of the big latch, but I don't think a toddler would be able to open this gate as easily as others on the market. I know my 150lb dog will stop at the gate and not be able to open it. :) The gate has two wings with a bolt-on hinge, so it's easy to adapt to different opening styles. The ends attach to the wall with screws or, in my case, we used zip ties to attach them to the kennel board. Just tightening the hinge screws makes the whole unit so stiff that the bulldog can't just squeeze through the edges if you haven't already secured the ends. I bought two of these - one for each entrance to my kitchen/dining room - and would recommend them to anyone looking to keep a dog (or toddler) out of the area.
