This device has a very small latch so my large dogs can't use their noses to open the gate. I have a similar gate from another manufacturer and they can open it at will. This is a regular gate but it worked for our unique area of installation so I'm happy with it. Having a gate at the very top or bottom of the stairs is annoying, so we like these gates for these reasons. It creates a buffer zone for the stairs, it's much safer and easier. The downside is that it's not very well made. This is the best safety gate I've seen. I have about 10 baby gates at home and none of them cost 2 cents. The pull gates just don't hold in place compared to a toddler - probably a baby, but definitely not a two-year-old boy.
