This is a regular gate but it worked for our unique area of installation so I'm happy with it. Having a gate at the very top or bottom of the stairs is annoying, so we like these gates for these reasons. It creates a buffer zone for the stairs, it's much safer and easier. The downside is that it's not very well made. Our gate will fall apart, it will literally fall apart where the two sections meet, very dangerous so I tied them together and cut the tie so my pinky fingers wouldn't get cut. The locking mechanism, while good, gets stuck at times. I did not find spacers for the base, maybe they sell it, but I did not find it, again we have a unique installation. The plastic piece that inserts into the metal frame is lost, I smeared it with glue, bad design. This is a really great design in terms of unusual installs, it will fit almost any space, just wish it was a little bigger and more massive. I don't trust the airtight gates at the top of the stairs, so I like that they're fixed at the hardware level. For stairs I recommend this type of gate. Once your child gets over this, unlike other gates, you have a small window to grab them. 3.5 stars.
