Cheap way to upgrade keys

My original VW keys lasted about 13 years before the bottom handle of both keys broke and I could no longer attach them to my keyring. This replacement key works very well and is probably the cheapest 'good' way to upgrade your keys. Installation was easy, it took me about 30 minutes to make both keys. Simply remove the old key and transfer the key blade, electronics and transponder to the new key. The transponder popped out of the old key easily after I heated it with a heat gun for a few seconds - I wouldn't recommend pulling it out without heat as it looks fragile. Also, this new spare key has a slot for a transponder, but mine was too small to fit in the slot so I added a dab of hot glue to secure it. As other reviewers have pointed out, there is a process for returning a metal switchblade, and I found a YouTube video that was pretty easy to follow - just line up the end of the spring in the slot and slide the knife in move in the direction in which the knife is located. The key is open, not closed. Keep in mind that there is a clear plastic cover on the front of the VW badge so you will need to clean both sides before applying it. In terms of quality, the structured plastic feels pleasant and comes pretty close to the feel of the original key. The keys are pressed similarly to the original key. However, this is not optimal. The key's metal blade protrudes slightly from the plastic case (see photos) and there is a small gap where the key blade does not rest against the underside of the key's plastic case. The plastic edge that the key blade sits on also feels a bit sharp - not in a dangerous way, but it cheapens the feel, although I think it will dull and get better in my pocket over time. Finally, the key blade does not open and close with the same click quality as the original key. I think the plastic is a bit thinner/lighter so it sounds and feels more clicky. All in all these are very minor flaws and this key was definitely worth the price, wish I had bought it sooner.
