Review on πŸ“€ Iomega 31119 Predator 4x4x6 External USB CD-RW Drive: Efficient Solution for External CD Writing by Kyle Ross

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Beware of this recorder

I'm the first to give this recorder 2 stars. Now we're at one. See my update at the end of this review. Sigh. it started well. Installation was quick and recording my first CD went smoothly. Then I bought TDK blanks in bulk and. Well, the Predator doesn't like them. About 10 media error reports burned. Stands. Switched to Sony and Memorex blanks and both recorded with no problems. Additionally, after some experimentation, it became fairly clear that USB would never support secure writes of any type other than 2x. You simply step into the world of errors. The USB port on the back of the device is weak. I'd say it's worth it just for the cross-platform compatibility (it works as promised) and portable size. My rating has been downgraded to 2 stars. I've been a CDR user for many years and I have to say if I were to reconsider this purchase I would go with a Firewire based connection. Something is wrong with that weak rear connector. I swear I've been gentle on this matter. I move my computer hardware around my desk (just a hardware swap) and when I plugged it back in it stopped working. Iomega technical support was poor. Essentially the rear connector is broken. After all sorts of twists and turns, I got it to work intermittently. I'm over it .
