Review on πŸ”§ Whiteside UD4122 Compression Router Bits: Superior Performance and Precision by Daniel Mandal

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This bit offers enough power and a decent edge processing without tearing.

I use it in my laptop 7539 router 3.25 HP at 19000 rpm. I cut 1/2" and 3/4" hardwood plywood in one pass. I started with a 1/4" Compression twist drill bit, Whiteside UD2102. 2102 cut a lot before it failed (crack in the collet). I wanted to try a larger diameter drill bit to see if I could get a faster feed rate by holding it by hand. This 4122 cuts much easier than the 2102. I can't hold the router steady with either of these attachments and feed it as quickly as a CNC machine, but the 4122 cuts with less effort from my hands. This cutter easily provides adequate productivity and a decent edge finish without tearing the veneer on either side. The hem isn't always perfect, but that's largely due to my inconsistent hand technique and the crumbly core I sometimes have to use.If I'm just in 3/4" go, it burns out, and when I cut some loose heartwood from poplar or spruce (oak veneer) the router doesn't always hold perfectly vertical and moving at the right linear speed and I can see a little bit of edge hair - can't fault the bit for that.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Not automatic
