Review on πŸ’Ύ WD Diskless My Cloud EX4100 Expert Series NAS - Reliable 4-Bay Network Attached Storage for Efficient Data Management by Michael Hemmig

Great drive with periods of frustration

These are good electronics that are easy to set up and use. Many RAID modes are available, including JBOD (just a bunch of hard drives) for maximum storage space. Once installed, everything worked and it was easy to access from almost anywhere. Then the problems started. The drive periodically disappears from my network. Many people have mentioned this issue and many fixes are listed. At first I disabled hibernation because I thought that somehow made the problem worse. I also gave the drive a static IP. No matter what settings I configured, the drive still disappears from my network about 3 times a week. I haven't found any solution that would bring it back online other than disconnecting the power supply and letting it update. When I do that, the drive comes back online after about 5 minutes and stays online until it decides to run away and hide again. I'm a little disappointed in Western Digital as it's a good company that usually solves such problems. Since purchasing this drive I have received 3 or 4 firmware updates from WD. Every time I hope that I've finally found and fixed the problem, but so far this hasn't happened. For the high price WD expects for this drive, I think they should have fixed that a long time ago. I don't know if other similarly sized drives from other companies work better. This drive was everything I wanted and needed in my system, but if I had to rebuild it I would buy a smaller setup which from the reviews I've read seems more stable. (I have a 4TB WD cloud drive that has worked reliably for years.) I wish WD would make this much more expensive drive work, but it doesn't!
