Inaccurate: Substance Analyzer

Got this with a brewing kit so my friend could learn how to brew beer. It took him a while to get into it, but since COVID-19 broke out, we're having a great time. The packaging is nice and comes with a measuring tube, padded hydrometer and a drawstring pouch for storage. The pouch is too short and does not completely cover the measuring tube, so this part is useless. As for the areometer itself, we haven't been able to get any reliable readings yet. Our initial gravity values were very low, and the final gravity values were completely different - slightly lower or even higher than the original ones. I made sure to keep the readings at 60 degrees and account for the meniscus to make sure it wasn't user error. I also went to the local brew shop and along with another hydrometer calibrated and we found a different reading as well as a different distance on the dial. I've found that the hydrometer I received just isn't accurate for measuring the alcohol content of beer, so I can't use it.
