This unit takes some getting used to. Replaced the phaser on the 5.4L engine. Fordtechmakeuloco walkthrough viewed on YouTube. Here are a few points to help when trying to replace the phaser. Spend money on an OTC instrument. I bent the tool's leg a couple of times, but it seems much stronger than other devices. 2. While depressing the spring, pause every 2-3 turns and push the valve stem down. Sometimes you don't press hard enough with your fingers and the valve stem stays up slightly. I used a wooden dow with a rag on the end - worked great.3. After removing the first 6 subscribers using the tool, you don't need to use the tool to remove the remaining subscribers. Once the phasers and chains are removed, simply remove the cams and take out the remaining 18 push rods.4. About the tool - there are no instructions for the tool, but there is an adjustment screw at the very top of the tool (the hand screw goes on top of it). If it's not all the way down you won't be able to reach the hand screw on some springs, but you may need to adjust it a few turns when changing pushrods to get the spring down far enough to reattach the pushrods. 5. Reinstalling Subscribers is a WORK! I suggest wearing a leather glove or using a rag for the hand screw. This is a very rough textured grip and I got a blister on my hand after maybe 8-10 pushers installed (started using a rag at this point). 6. One more note about the tool (I'd like a photo). As I said, this tool is not exactly easy to use and takes a little getting used to. I noticed that when the spring pusher (leg) slides into the bracket (the part of the hinges under the cam), the flat side adjusting nut goes into the bracket. Apparently this can happen one of two ways, but for me the tool would be misaligned and more prone to foot flex if the plane wasn't facing the cam. My solution was to mark the outside of the adjusting nut. It was too easy to misplace the tool and then tighten it only to find it difficult to turn and move. With the label it was much easier to set up the instrument properly. The mark was just a notch I made against the flat end of the nut. So the flat should be facing the cam and the notch should be 180 degrees on the other side. Hope that helps!
