Great clinical thermometer? Uh, not so much.

I've had this digital thermometer a long time and have used it often enough to form an opinion and share it. Great clinical thermometer! However, there is room for improvement. ADVANTAGES - Easy to use, nice bright backlit display, good presets and the ability to change and tweak the session program if needed. Warnings are optional, and while I didn't calibrate or test the temperature sensors, it was enough to get the meat closer to the standard ranges of Rareness, Medium Rareness, etc. Is it exactly 164.3 degrees Fahrenheit for Medium Rare? Who knows. but for 90% of chefs who are only interested in standards, that's fine. If you need something so sophisticated that the kitchen could burn out if the temperature drops a few degrees below normal, then you might want to consider a professional or scientific thermometer. CONS: I don't understand some design/programming options of the thermometer. For example, there are two switches on the back - one for ON/OFF and the other for choosing whether the devices should be used as a thermometer or as a timer. However, global parameters that can only be set once are run via the touchscreen and are NOT saved. For example, choose between Celsius and Fahrenheit readings. Since I'm in the US (like most people on .com (no country)) I have to switch to Fahrenheit every time I turn on the device. It seems [logical] that it would be the switch on the back (or learned if software is installed) since I switched between timer and thermometer far more often than between "C" and "F". Also, there is no dedicated button for it. It's a long press on a button with weird markings that short presses have absolutely nothing to do with temperature. Also, the backlight isn't always on (and there's no way to force it). Obviously a battery powered device is desirable to conserve battery life. But once it runs out, the text is barely legible. You can of course turn it back on, but only by pressing the area of the touchscreen that corresponds to the button, which can wreak havoc with your settings. Product. Overall it's functionally great, but its quirky stuff keeps it from being great overall.
