Review on Linksys USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter for MacBook Air, Chromebook, Ultrabook (USB3GIG), Black by Luis Mercado

Great USB 3.0 LAN/RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter!

I had previously purchased a USB 2.0 10/100 Mbps version of this device (then called "Cisco" versus Linksys) and was happy with it, but wanted to move to Gigabit / 1000Mbps and USB 3.0 as Gigabit network hardware is becoming as ubiquitous as USB 3.0 ports and there is no need for bottlenecks. The form factor of this device is almost identical to the previous USB 2.0/10/100 Mbps version, with the only exception of the USB connector and the fact that it is Linksys instead of Cisco. The cable is obviously a bit thicker, but still flexible enough to tuck into hard-to-reach places (e.g. a USB accessory pocket). The improvement they made in this version is that you have two separate plugs, one for the USB plug and one for the RJ45 socket. Previously it was a one-piece L-shaped cable that just didn't work and was difficult to hold onto and caused the thinner USB 2.0 cable to bend at extreme angles. Now, in this version of USB 3.0, you just put one connector on the USB cable and one on the RJ45 port and the cable is still free to rotate, which is great. This makes storage much easier and less hassle. The adapter came with a driver CD, but you can (and I did) download the drivers from the manufacturer's website or use the offline installer/wizard if you prefer. set up the drivers for you. I threw away the drivers on the USB flash drive and threw away the floppy disk. I recommend everyone to do the same. All in all, an excellent device from a well-known manufacturer and at a great price. No problem and I would definitely buy it again.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Good, but not great
