Review on πŸ”’ D-Link DSR-250: High-Speed 8-Port Gigabit VPN Router with Dynamic Web Content Filtering by Jason Guzman

No OpenVPN support in routers

I don't want to slow down the entire network through multiple devices in the VPN, was hoping that this would be the answer to that problem, but it's just another problem. New firmware, on the latest hardware version (Hardware A4 and Firmware 3.12_WW), the device does not support the current OpenVPN client standard (using a single configuration file). The $14 unit I replaced with this purchase is closer to engineering standards, has better tech support, and is more stable. I'm trying to set up this device, it randomly kicks me out after 2-3 screens. I changed the timeout and it hangs after a few screens or changing settings and saving. I'm still working on it, but it's a painful process. I will update the rating when the item is returned or I get it working. Update: Doesn't work with NordVPN. I worked with D-Link support and my VPN provider, D-Link, agrees that they simply don't support current OpenVPN standards. This router requires multiple certificates (the CA cert I had, the server/client cert even though it's marked as optional, the server/client key even though it's marked as optional, and the DH key) instead a single .ovpn like other routers require. I'm fairly proficient with this type of hardware and spent about a week and 20+ hours finally getting D-Link to agree that this just doesn't work for OpenVPN.

Pros
  • Supports up to (25) simultaneous IPsec VPN tunnels plus (25) additional PPTP/L2TP tunnels
Cons
  • Was corrupted
