Review on Stoneware Pickling Fermentation Trademark Innovations by Daniel Hhneverdie

Unglazed, suitable for home brewing and winemaking

If you are looking for an enamelled/glazed weight this is not it. This is earthenware. I'm not against porcelain stoneware, but personally I wouldn't use porcelain stoneware for fermentation. To me, a non-smooth texture is a surface for potential bacteria. I only hike with glass weights. I've tried a water filled bag but it's not heavy enough and I don't trust plastic. I tried a gold rimmed tea saucer weighted down with a zippered water bag, but there was mold on the edges of the food. I don't know if it's related to the saucer or the pouch. I even tried a heavy chrome Pampered Chef meat grinder as a load (I unscrewed the handle). It was tough enough, but the fermentation process literally destroyed the plastic insert that the handle is screwed into.

Pros
  • Set of 2 pickle weights, suitable for 5 liter jug
Cons
  • No insurance
