I ordered this drill bit for a specific purpose, which was to fit ordinary flat glass from the large cardboard store into the oak walls of the display case my father and I were building to hold some of his scale models. This was the fifth case we've built and up to this point we've used a .125" single blade cutter (the only device close to that size available in town) and just a large gap between the glass accepted . Groove Thickness and Width We needed shims to prevent chattering during case assembly and we wanted to avoid that on the fifth case. Cutter (3/8") and the cutter diameter is a multiple of the 4D depth. This seemed quite extreme to me, and I was very concerned about the durability of the bit used. As it turned out, my fears were completely unfounded. This carbide drill from Freud Industrial cuts through oak like BUTTER. I made my deepest cuts in two passes, about 3/16" deep in one pass, and I barely felt the drill bit in the cut, the action was so smooth. A quarter of it is 3/ 8" deep and the rest is about 1/4" deep. At the end of the project, inspection under 30x magnification showed no signs of bit damage. Tips were still sharp, edges were still sharp, no signs of heat, etc This nozzle works for many other applications.
