Review on πŸš€ Enhanced Performance with BIGTREETECH Control Upgrade Motherboard Compitable by Mark Greenwood

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great buy but big warning. 3 STARS IS TEMPORARY, EXPECTING TO UPGRADE TO 5 SOON.

The board works. Most of time. I bought SKR V1.4 and SKR V1.4 Turbo. The 3 stars are temporary, sometime in the next few months I expect to change this to 5 stars but can't yet because I can't get it to play with the TMC series drivers yet (TMC 2208, TMC2209 and TMC5160 only tested .) THIS IS ONLY A TEMPORARY PROBLEM. As far as I can tell, this is a firmware issue and not a physical issue, so the bugs will be fixed in their respective communities (Marlin, Klipper, Smoothieware, etc.) over the next few months. I'm sure non-intelligent drivers like A4988 and LV8825 currently work fine, but I haven't tested them. Unless you're an advanced user and/or (probably AND) don't have add-on boards and important projects that rely on a working board, I no longer recommend buying it after February 9th, 2020. Regularly check and google the firmware, board and the specific drivers you will be using to make sure someone else gets them working. I have no regrets with this purchase, I will patiently wait with them for a few months and then replace. Stock firmware has not been tested. I've only tested Marlin 2.0.X and Marlin 2.0.3 and compared the expected behavior between SKR V1.4 (and SKR V1.4 Turbo) with the SKR V1.3 boards they will replace and those for Marlin 2.0. X are configured. Currently Marlin 2.0.X and 2.0.3 don't work well with it, neither does TMC 2209 and TMC 5160. I've used TMC 2208 in some experiments but haven't taken any steps to see if they work well when I'm just using them TMC2208. The firmware was setup the same as my working SKR V1.3 boards, simply changing the board name to marlin in Config.h and in the case of the SKR V1.4 Turbo also updating the build environment. Everything worked! Until this happened. Sensorless homing works on both TMC2209 and TMC5160, BLTouch works, fans and heaters work etc. Somewhere between 2 and 10 levels up (always on the same point of the same gcode files, although different from one gcode file to another) the y- The axis motor stops responding (stops working). The extruder keeps running and X and Z keep running but it gets stuck on Y. There was also an issue where Z stopped moving without prompting (but never broke the machine, although as shown below Z=0 .) This isn't a physical issue, I can do it through a SKR V1.3 board replace and it works great with the same settings and driver combinations. I expect the issue will be fixed soon and I've googled a bit to see if I can try other firmwares, but I get the impression the boards aren't supported anywhere (Klipper, Smoothieware) and/or with at the moment become driver TMC2209 or TMC5160.

Pros
  • πŸŽ„Includes an optional heater protection circuit that protects against uncontrolled heating of the bed and hot-end heaters. The heaters are off by default. So if the microcontroller or MOSFETs are damaged, the heaters will turn off instead of going into thermal runaway mode.
Cons
  • No instructions
